Everyone says they are going to "Murchison Falls." Most of them mean the park — the game drives, the giraffes, the boat on the Nile. But Murchison Falls is one exact place: a single, violent gap in the rock where the longest river on earth loses its temper. It is worth knowing the difference, because standing beside the waterfall itself is one of the great experiences in Uganda.
The most powerful stretch of the Nile
At Murchison, the Victoria Nile — already carrying the outflow of Lake Victoria on its way to Lake Albert — is squeezed into a gorge less than ten metres wide. At the top it forces itself through a gap in the rocks just seven metres across and drops 43 metres to the pool below. Around 300 cubic metres of water push through that gap every second.
The result is not a wide, postcard curtain of water. It is a firehose: the whole Nile compressed into a slot you could almost throw a stone across, exploding into white spray and a roar you feel in your chest before you see it. It is often called the most powerful waterfall in the world, and once you have stood on the rocks at the top, you stop arguing with the claim. On a bright day the spray throws rainbows across the gorge.
Murchison, Kabalega, and the men who named it
The falls were named in 1864 by the explorer Samuel Baker and his wife Florence, the first Europeans to record them, after Sir Roderick Murchison, then President of the Royal Geographical Society. In the 1970s the name was briefly changed to Kabalega Falls, after the Omukama (king) of Bunyoro, though the change was never made law and later reverted. You will still hear both names today.
The falls, and the falls' park
The waterfall came first; the park took its name from it. Murchison Falls National Park — Uganda's largest — is the protected area you enter and drive through, 3,840 square kilometres of savannah, borassus palms, elephants, lions, giraffes and the Nile itself. The falls are the beating heart of it, but they are one feature within it. When people talk about "park entry," the gates and the game drives, they mean the National Park. When they talk about the seven-metre gap and the 43-metre drop, they mean the falls.
Hemingway's very bad week
In January 1954, Ernest Hemingway's chartered plane clipped a telegraph wire and crashed just downriver from the falls. The rescue plane sent to collect him crashed on take-off the next day. Reported dead, he later read his own obituaries — and recovered here, at Masindi Hotel, in the room that still carries his name. The falls have a way of writing themselves into people's lives.
How to see Murchison Falls from Masindi Hotel
This is where being the closest hotel to the park earns its keep. You do not need to move into the park to see the falls — you can do the whole thing in a day and sleep in a real bed at either end of it.
Masindi Hotel → park gate: about 20 km — roughly 30 minutes to the Kichumbanyobo entrance.
Park gate → the falls: roughly 47 km on through the park.
In total: about 67 km from our veranda to the top of the falls.
A typical day: leave the hotel at first light, reach the gate around 06:30, and take a morning game drive on the northern bank while the animals are still moving. In the early afternoon, a boat launch carries you up the Nile to the foot of the falls, close enough to be soaked by the spray — or you take the short, steep walk to the top, where the whole river disappears into that seven-metre gap beneath your feet. Then it is back through the gate and home to Masindi for dinner on the veranda.
