The African Queen Double
Three rooms in the 1923 wing, two of which you can ask for by name. Katharine Hepburn slept in Room 3 and Humphrey Bogart in Room 5 while The African Queen was being filmed. High ceilings, thick walls that keep the afternoon out, adjoining bathrooms and space for a cot.
The African Queen Twin
The same 1923 wing, two beds instead of one - these are the rooms in between Hepburn’s and Bogart’s. Same ceilings, same veranda doors onto the garden, adjoining bathrooms.
The African Queen Triple
The last room in the original 1923 wing, made up as a triple. Three beds under one high ceiling, an adjoining bathroom, and the garden through the door - the simplest way to keep a family together in the oldest part of the hotel.
The Hemingway Room
In January 1954 Ernest Hemingway survived two plane crashes in two days near Murchison Falls, read his own obituaries in the papers, and came here to recover. This is the room. It is also the largest in the hotel, with an ensuite bath, a separate toilet and its own veranda over the garden.
Baker Deluxe
The quiet wing running from the Hemingway Bar down past the Explorer block, every door opening onto a veranda over the garden. Compact, comfortable, and the best value in the house - which is why most safari crews end up here. Rooms 14 and 15 adjoin and can be combined into a family room.
Baker Deluxe Twin
The twin of the Baker Deluxe: two beds, the same veranda, the same garden. Named for Samuel and Florence Baker, whose trail crosses the ground these rooms stand on.
Kitara Deluxe Single
Six singles in the Explorer block, built when Masindi Hotel was busy enough that guests booked two years ahead. Small, quiet and functional, with adjoining bathrooms - made for the traveller who is here to be up before dawn rather than to linger. Kitara is the older name of this kingdom.
Birders
Five rooms that look straight into the trees, which is how they got the name. Something is always moving out there at first light, and a vervet monkey will occasionally look back in. Small, comfortable and ensuite.
The Cottage
A bedroom, a living room and a bathroom of your own, standing apart in the century-old gardens. For guests who want the hotel without the corridor.
The Family House
Two bedrooms, a living room and an enclosed patio, each bedroom with its own washroom and shower — the whole house to yourselves, and the best choice for a family or a group travelling together. It is also the only part of the hotel that converts for backpackers: the standard setup comes out and double bunk beds go in, four in Room 30 and three in Room 29, sleeping fourteen. We take that arrangement only when a group confirms it will occupy all fourteen beds.

The Family House, Inside and Out
Most rooms open onto a veranda of their own, facing the gardens rather than a corridor.
The Campsite
Six and a half acres of gardens under trees planted close to a century ago. You pitch inside the hotel grounds, not beside them — a few steps from the terraces, and a short walk from reception.
You are camping inside a century-old garden, and it behaves like one. A resident family of vervet monkeys works the trees most of the day and has done for years, and the birding starts at your tent flap rather than forty kilometres away - the black-headed gonolek is the one guests notice first, for the noise. After dark an owl takes up position in the branches overhead and calls through the night. Campers tend to mention it in their reviews before they mention the showers.
Masindi is the last comfortable stop before the road drops to Lake Albert and the Bugungu gate, which is why overland vehicles have been pulling in here for decades. We are listed on iOverlander as an established campground.
Campers have washrooms and showers of their own, right beside the camping ground — three showers and three washrooms for men, and the same again for women, with plenty of hot water and kept clean.
Wi-Fi is free, and campers are welcome in the hotel’s common areas: the lounges, the terraces, the Kabalega Restaurant and the Hemingway Bar.

Arrival & departure
- •Check-in from 14:00, check-out by 10:00. Arrive earlier and you are welcome in the gardens and the restaurant while the room is made ready, and we will store your luggage.
