What actually matters

Cotton or other breathable fabrics cope best with Masindi's daytime heat, and a couple of neutral-toned pieces (khaki, olive, beige) are useful if you're joining a game drive, though nothing here requires full safari gear. Evenings on the veranda can turn cool enough for a light long-sleeved layer, and mornings before a dawn game drive are the coolest part of the day.

Closed shoes are worth packing for walks around the hotel's 6.5 acres of garden and for forest paths in Budongo, with sandals for evenings at the Hemingway Bar. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen matter more than most people expect this close to the equator, and insect repellent is sensible for evenings in the gardens.

What you don't need to bring

Because the hotel runs its own laundry service, there's little reason to pack for a two-week trip if you're only staying a few nights — a smaller bag that's easy to load in and out of a safari vehicle is more useful than a full suitcase. The hotel has also been fully solar-powered since 2024, so a phone charger and a UK-style plug adapter are really all you need to keep devices running; a power bank is a sensible backup for long days out at Murchison Falls.

If wildlife is on the itinerary, binoculars or a camera with some zoom are worth the space in your bag — most of what you'll see at Murchison Falls and along the Royal Mile rewards a closer look.
