Kabalega Restaurant sits inside Masindi Hotel and takes its name from Omukama Kabalega, the Bunyoro king who resisted British colonial expansion in the late 19th century — a fitting namesake for a dining room inside Uganda's oldest hotel.
What's on the menu
The à la carte menu runs wide rather than deep: classic salads and soups, Indian dishes like palak paneer and chicken tikka masala, Chinese stir-fries, East African plates such as pan-fried goat with kachumbari and whole fried tilapia, sandwiches, pasta, and a children's menu with fish fingers and chips. Desserts include lemon cake, banana bread and chocolate cake, available by the slice or by the kilogram to take away.
Kitchen hours are straightforward: breakfast from 7 to 11am, lunch from 12:30 to 3pm, dinner from 7 to 10pm, and à la carte ordering in between from 11am to 10pm, with last orders at 9:45pm — useful to know whether you're a hotel guest, a driver waiting on a group, or just passing through Masindi.
Beyond the restaurant
Evenings usually move next door to the Hemingway Bar, named for the writer who recovered at the hotel after his 1954 plane crashes nearby. Guests can also order ahead online before arriving from the park, so a table and a meal are ready without a wait.
Outside guests are welcome, and groups are best arranged with advance notice so the kitchen can prepare accordingly.
