Murchison Falls National Park, about 20 km from the hotel, is home to Uganda's largest population of Rothschild's giraffe, alongside elephants, buffalo, Jackson's hartebeest, and the hippos and Nile crocodiles that line the river below the falls. Lion and leopard sightings happen but depend on luck and location within the park.

Budongo Forest Reserve, a short drive further, is one of Uganda's best sites for chimpanzee tracking, and the Royal Mile within it is well known among birders for forest species that are hard to find elsewhere in the country.

Even the hotel grounds have something to offer

The 6.5 acres of garden around Masindi Hotel, planted with trees that predate the hotel's 1923 founding, attract a reasonable range of garden and forest-edge birds — worth a slow walk with binoculars before or after a day in the park.

Most guests split their stay between a game drive or Nile boat launch in Murchison Falls, a chimpanzee trek in Budongo, and time in the gardens back at the hotel — a pace that suits wildlife photography better than trying to fit everything into a single rushed day.
